Introducing adidas Ultraboost 2.0: a New Spin on a Classic

Adidas Ultraboost 2.0 Blue

By the end of 2015, the Adidas Ultraboost was a roaring success, on its way to becoming the unanimous sneaker of the year. The Three Stripes knew the Ultraboost had to be a shoe that remained in its product lineup, so they made a few small revisions and released it as the Ultraboost 2.0.

adidas Ultraboost 1.0 vs. 2.0: Key Differences

The Ultraboost 2.0 replaced the mesh section on the ankle collar and heel, extending the Primeknit upper to cover this section of the shoe. The full Primeknit upper provided more stretch in the material, making them easier to put on and even more comfortable than the original releases.

In addition, adidas standardized the Continental rubber outsole for improved durability. This wasn't a new concept since a few limited versions of had Continental outsoles. However, all 2.0 models got them. Runners could log more miles on them, and sneakerheads could rock them daily without quickly wearing them into the ground.

The most notable difference — albeit pure aesthetics — was the Primeknit pattern. The original Ultraboost used a two-tone arrow-shaped pattern, while the later Ultraboost 2.0 sported a gradient-like design.

Collectible Ultraboost 2.0 Releases

A handful of Ultraboost 1.0s released well into 2016, but the Ultraboost 2.0 had plenty of interesting and sought-after colorways as well. Some of the most desirable releases include the "Medal Pack," inspired by the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, which included three sneakers with gold (BB3929), silver (BB4077), and bronze (BB4078) accents, respectively.

In celebration of the 2016-2017 NCAA football season, adidas produced team colorways for Texas A&M Aggies, Arizona State Sun Devils, Indiana Hoosiers, Kansas Jayhawks, Louisville Cardinals, Miami Hurricanes, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Nebraska Cornhuskers, North Carolina State Wolfpack and UCLA Bruins. Each shoe featured simple color-blocking with the school's colors and resonated with students, alumni, and fans.

The Three Stripes also released the limited-edition "Reflective Pack," which included the white (BB3928) and black (BY1795) Ultraboost 2.0, each with reflective accents on the Primeknit uppers.

The "Triple White" Colorway Returns on the Ultraboost 2.0

After Kanye West made the original "Triple White" a hit in 2015, it was only a matter of time before adidas brought the colorway to the updated Ultraboost 2.0. Less than one year later, the "Triple White" Ultraboost 2.0 (AQ5929) was released in April 2016. This time, it featured a brighter white Primeknit and a white Continental outsole. These more accurately represented the "Triple White" name than the 1.0, which featured creamy white Primeknit and black rubber outsoles.

But even with the updated all-white look, the Ultraboost 2.0 never reached the same level of resale value as the pair worn by Kanye. In 2016, the resale value peaked at about $300. It can now be found for much less due to multiple iterations of all-white Ultraboosts releasing over the years.

Giving the adidas Ultraboost 2.0 a Customized Touch

Comparing and contrasting patterns on the Ultraboost 1.0 and 2.0 are a matter of preference, but the updated gradient pattern did allow for more unique color combinations. Through a program called "mi adidas," consumers could customize their sneakers using different color palettes, including several "Multicolor" Primeknit options.

However, the rarest colorway was the mi adidas "Lady Liberty" Ultraboost 2.0 (CG2928-LL), released exclusively at the adidas flagship store in New York City. The customizable shoe, limited to 700 pairs, used an Ice Green upper to mimic the oxidized copper finish on the Statue of Liberty. The shoes initially saw a substantially high resale value, but adidas released a nearly identical "Antique Brass" colorway (CG2928) in December 2018 that brought the value down a bit. Even with a similar release, the NYC-exclusive "Lady Liberty" is still one of the most expensive Ultraboost colorways on the market — if you can find a pair.
