Behind the Boost: History of the adidas Ultraboost

Adidas Ultraboost 1.0 Multicolor

The adidas made its debut in 2015 and featured its innovative Boost technology on the midsole. Although the revolutionary cushioning system was the highlight of the sneaker, the technology wasn't exactly new. Instead, the Ultraboost was a culmination of years of research, development and several earlier sneaker silhouettes.

In 2011, adidas teamed up with BASF, a German chemical company, to develop a longer lasting and more reactive cushioning system that could replace commonly used and quickly worn-out cushioning materials like EVA foam and rubber.

Together, adidas and BASF developed an expanded thermoplastic polyurethane material, a small bead-like cell formed around a pocket of air. When the small cells were fused, Boost was the result. Boost was designed to return energy to the wearer rather than the ground, which reduced impact and improved comfort.

The technology was first used in 2013 on the adidas Energy Boost. This shoe mostly attracted the attention of dedicated runners, and then again in 2014 on the adidas Pure Boost, which offered casual appeal.

By 2015, adidas refined Boost, and the Ultraboost became the flagship model for the technology. The silhouette was a tremendous success that resonated with both performance and lifestyle consumers and was largely responsible for The Brand With the Three Stripes' modern resurgence in the sneaker industry.

The Kanye Effect Steps Thing Up

Kanye West has had a monumental impact on the success of adidas since signing with the brand in 2013, and his presence in the sneaker space initially overshadowed the Ultraboost.

The original black and purple Ultraboost colorway (B27171), released on February 11, 2015, just three days before Kanye's debut adidas sneaker, the Yeezy Boost 750, was released during NBA All-Star Weekend in New York City. The buzz and hype around the Yeezy Boost 750 largely overshadowed the Ultraboost in its first few months of production, but things changed as soon as Kanye put on a pair.

West unveiled the "Triple White" Ultraboost 1.0s (S77416) while performing at LA radio station Power 106's Powerhouse concert in May 2015, about two weeks before its official release date. Pre-orders were filled, it sold out instantly and became the first truly desirable Ultraboost with resale prices reaching upwards of $400. From that point forward, sneaker collectors and resellers paid close attention to all future Ultraboost releases.

Collectibility and Value of the adidas Ultraboost

At the time of its release, the Ultraboost was shockingly expensive with its $180 price tag. An adidas running sneaker had never sold for that much, and the cost was considerably higher than some of the most popular sneakers from Nike and Jordan Brand. Despite the jarring retail price, consumers of all types slowly realized that Ultraboosts were worth the high price. Runners appreciated the cushioning and support over other sneakers, casual wearers loved the comfort, and resellers and collectors cashed in on the limited supply and growing demand.

Over time, the adidas Ultraboost became less valuable on the resale market. This was due to the droves of new colorway releases, restocks on previously limited colorways, and more adidas Yeezy releases diminishing the impact Kanye West first had on the silhouette.

Now that the initial hype has dissipated, the adidas Ultraboost can be found at prices dipping below retail or going over retail, depending on the colorway or collaboration.

Ultraboost 1.0: Designed for Stability, Support and Comfort

In addition to the Boost midsole, the Ultraboost has many other details that make it a versatile shoe for running and overall comfort. The sneaker features a stretchy sock-like bootie upper made from Primeknit with a mesh ankle collar for lightweight breathability. Stability and support come in the form of a plastic heel cup, side cages with an integrated lacing system and adidas's Torsion System in the midfoot.

The Ultraboost used a standard rubber outsole, but select models got an upgraded Continental (yes, the same brand that makes tires) rubber sole, a feature that later became standard on all Ultraboosts. All of the shoe's components were specifically designed with runners in mind, but everyday comfort-seekers and streetwear fashion fans quickly gravitated to it.

The adidas brand also teamed with J&D Collective, Kris Van Assche, Kolor and HYPEBEAST for special collaborations on the Ultraboost. The HYPEBEAST x adidas Ultraboost was the most popular because it featured a unique cageless design — a styling element that adidas eventually evolved into a dedicated silhouette.
