Minn Kota Trolling Motor Components

Minn Kota began in 1934 with the first gear-driven electric trolling motor. Quality craftsmanship and creative innovation has led Minn Kota to be the first in bringing new technology to marine technology. Minn Kota is one of the well-known brands for trolling motors.

Can a trolling motor mount to an inflatable raft?

Yes, you can. You will need to make sure your inflatable raft has a transom-mount to attach the trolling motor. When selecting a trolling motor you will want to measure the distance between your transom-mount to the water and add 12 inches. Add 5 inches more if you plan to be in rough waters and add 12 inches if you will stand to steer most often. Thrust is the power needed to move the marine craft as trolling motors have a max speed of 5MPH. It is advisable to carry a deep charge battery in the event you need to recharge your motor.

How do you choose the right shaft length?

If you do not want a lot of noise to scare the fish away, shaft length plays a critical role. Selecting the correct shaft length for bow-mounted trolling motors is particularly important because unlike transom-mount, they vary greatly from their distance to the water.

To measure for shaft length, you want to measure the distance between the water and the bow mount or transom mount. Add 12 inches to that number because the topside of the motor should be submerged to a depth of 12 inches. If you do not plan to navigate rough waters or stand while you steer the trolling motor, you will have the correct measurement for your trolling motor. If you will be in rough waters, add 5 inches, and if you plan to stand and steer, add 12 inches for the correct shaft measurement.

What kind of battery is recommended for trolling motors?

Minn Kota has a portable digital charger along with Minn Kotas on-board chargers. To select the right battery, you must first decide if you want a lead acid wet cell or an AGM battery. Minn Kota Wet cell batteries are most common and last roughly 30 months. AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. These batteries are completely sealed, last between 3 and 4 years, and are maintenance free.

The final factor in selecting a Minn Kota battery is the Amperage Hour Rating. The Amperage Hour Rating is basically the number of hours the battery will deliver. The number of hours is then divided by the speed you are pulling. Minn Kota recommends a battery with a minimum of 100 amperage hour rating in Group 27 with 175 minutes of Reserve Capacity (RC).
