Sony Blu-ray Players

Blu-ray is a digital optical disc format that lets you watch videos in crisp, detailed, and clear high-definition resolution. The format is named after the blue laser, which the player uses to read the disc. These particular players are made by Sony.

What is the difference between high-definition and ultra high-definition?

High-definition (HD) and ultra high-definition (UHD) describe two different resolution formats. High-definition is defined as a maximum resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. UHD, sometimes known as 4K resolution, has a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels. That means a UHD screen has a total of four times as many pixels as a regular HD screen. UHD content takes up much more storage space than regular HD content, and so UHD discs can hold up to 100 GB in size. In order to actually watch content at this resolution, the Blu-ray player needs to be specifically designed with the ability to play UHD discs, and you also need a compatible television. UHD players are backward-compatible with standard Blu-ray discs, but the opposite is not true.

Do Blu-ray discs have region codes?

Blu-ray manufacturers have implemented a region coding system where Blu-ray players from one specific geographical region are only designed to read discs from the same region. This is done to control the distribution and price levels of the discs. There are three main regions:

  • Region A: North America, South America, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia
  • Region B: Australia, New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East, Southwest Asia, and most of Europe
  • Region C: Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, mainland China, Central Asia, and South Asia

Region-free discs either have no region coding or are programmed to work in all three regions. UHD discs are completely region-free.

What are some features of a Sony Blu-ray player?

The precise features of a Sony Blu-ray player can vary dramatically based on the model. The most basic Blu-ray player can play Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and CDs. Select models may have stereoscopic 3D Blu-ray playback too, which works as long as you have a compatible 3D television or monitor. Some players can also connect with the Internet through Wi-Fi or Ethernet cables, so you can stream content from online services, watch video on demand, browse the Internet, or manage all of your multimedia content from a single device.

What is upscaling?

Image upscaling is a common feature of many Blu-ray players. It converts a video signal from one display resolution into a higher resolution. A standard Blu-ray player can upscale standard-definition video into HD, whereas an HD player can upscale HD video into UHD video. An algorithm is commonly used to reduce image artifacts that can result from the conversion process, but the quality of the upscaling process depends on the player.
