Soft Tubs

Finding the Right Soft Tub for Your Home

Soft tubs offer a unique means of enjoying a luxury spa tub experience in the comfort of your own outdoor space. Soft tubs are smaller than traditional hot tubs, offering even those with limited space the chance to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of a jetted tub. Understanding the features offered by different soft tub manufacturers will help you make a savvy buying decision.

The difference between a soft tub and a traditional hot tub

Soft tubs offer many features similar to those of traditional hot tubs but are often more widely adaptable to various outdoor spaces. Consider these differences:

  • Hot tubs require a concrete pad - When installing a hot tub in your outdoor space, the weight of a traditional, acrylic hot tub will require a concrete pad to support the unit as well as the weight of the water once filled. Soft tubs are lighter in weight and therefore do not require a concrete pad for installation — just a level surface.
  • Hot tubs require a dedicated electric 220 v 60 amp line - When installing a hot tub, you will need to have an electrician install a dedicated 220 v 60 amp line to power the unit. Soft tubs also use electricity but are designed to simply plug into an existing outdoor electrical outlet.
Can a soft tub jet both hot and cold water?

Soft tubs offer the widest range of jetted spa water therapies. The soft tub can heat water, allowing for heated water therapy, or it can run cool water through the system, offering a therapeutic cold water spa, which is ideal for those who need to reduce muscle or joint pain or inflammation.

The unique heating system of a soft tub uses heat recovery to keep the water at a set temperature of your choosing. Hot tubs use a heating element that allows for only hot water usage.

Items you need to inspect when considering a used soft tub

Purchasing a used soft tub can be a savvy investment for your outdoor space, allowing you to save money. When considering a used soft tub for sale, be sure to inspect these areas carefully:

  • Liner - Be sure to closely check the liner for any tears or rips. The liner should be smooth and wrinkle-free.
  • Heating system - Most soft tubs use a heat recovery system to heat the water, capturing heat from the friction of the pump. However, some soft tubs also feature a heating element. Ask for details on the heating system and check any heating elements for signs of wear.
  • Pump and jets - The pump moves the water through the jets; be sure both are operating properly.
