Samsung USB Cables and Adapters

Your smartphone requires a compatible USB charging cable and adapter. When choosing Samsung USB cables and adapters, there are a few considerations to keep in mind.

What kind of USB cable do Samsung devices require?

The type of USB cable used by your device is dependent on its make and model. For Samsung devices, such as a Samsung Galaxy, Galaxy Note, or S8 along with almost every other device that runs on the Android operating system, the charge and data ports use what’s known as a micro-USB cable. While micro cable format is standard for many electronic devices, Samsung tablets and phones may charge and transfer data using a variety of data cables, such as:

  • USB Type-C: Also known as a fast-charge cable, this type of USB cable can be plugged in up or down.
  • USB 3.0: Featuring a different shape than other port designs, this design has extra pins.
Is there a difference between OEM and aftermarket cables?

OEM, which stands for original equipment manufacturer, is a term used to describe USB cables that are made by Samsung. Aftermarket cables are generalized versions of specific USB cable designs. Unlike OEM accessories, aftermarket products aren’t necessarily made by Samsung. When comparing aftermarket cables, confirm that the cable's power transfer matches the power requirements for your device.

What is a USB-C fast charging adapter?

Unlike a standard accessory, the USB-C fast charge adapter is designed specifically for the increased data and power transfer for type C cables. This accessory is intended to work with USB-C designs.

Are all wall adapters the same?

A wall adapter plugs into an electrical outlet and connects to a phone cable. Just like any other accessory, not all are designed to work with every cable design. For example, USB-C cables are approved to operate with specific USB-C accessories. The same is true when using a micro-USB cable.

What should you do if your device won’t charge?

If you’re using an approved USB connector and your device isn’t responding, there are several troubleshooting steps that may help determine the root of the problem.

  • Plug your device into the USB wall charger and wait for up to one hour. It can take up to 10 minutes before the battery indicator icon appears on the screen.
  • Unplug your device and hold the power button for at least 20 seconds. If there is a charge in its battery, the Samsung logo should appear on the screen.
  • Does the device turn on? If so, turn it off and continue charging for up to six hours.
  • If your device fails to turn on, it may require servicing by an authorized Samsung repairman.
