PCGS Certified Morgan Dollars 1878-1921

The Philadelphia Mint began making Morgan dollar coins in March of 1878. The name of the coin is that of United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, who designed the piece. These silver coins were produced from 1878 until 1901 and again in 1921.

What do Morgan Dollars look like?

A Morgan dollar weighs 26.73 grams and is one and a half inches in diameter. This standard, reed-edged coin features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with the word "Liberty" inscribed on it. She wears a crown of wheat and cotton in her hair. The reverse side of the 90% silver coin shows an eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows above a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon. Below the bird are the words "One Dollar" and the mint mark.

What are some production errors for Morgan dollars?

Some Morgan dollars were produced with a smaller number of released currency than others or feature unusual production errors such as

  • 1888‑O "Hot Lips": These coins were produced in New Orleans. They were struck twice during the minting process. The profile face thus shows two noses, two sets of lips and two chins.
  • 1889-CC: The mint at Carson City, Nevada, had been closed for three years when it was reopened in the third quarter to make these Morgan silver dollars. Therefore, there were very few of them produced.
  • 1893‑S: Only 100,000 of these Morgan silver dollars were produced in January 1893 before the San Francisco mint was closed.
  • 1878 8 Tailfeathers Reverse: The eagle on these Morgan silver dollars struck at the Philadelphia mint has eight tailfeathers.
  • 1878 7 Tailfeathers over 8: Look carefully at these coins and you will see seven tailfeathers overpunched on the original eight feathers.
  • 1878 7 Tailfeathers: These are Morgan silver dollars with only seven tailfeathers made in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City in 1898.
  • 1921 D: After the production of the Morgan silver dollars had stopped for 17 years, the government ordered them to be remade in 1921. Very few were made in Denver because it was not open during the earlier production period.
What is a complete Morgan set?

A complete set consists of 97 Morgan silver coins with one coin from each mint for each year it was produced. Additional collections may include one example of each coin with a production error or other rarities like a small number of coins on a production run.
