How to Choose Olympus SmartMedia Camera Memory Cards

Photographers all across the board will likely agree that nothing is more of a buzz-kill than that little pop-up reading "disk image space full." Whether photography is your hobby or profession, knowing which memory cards you'll need is critical. Choosing a memory card that has enough speed, has enough space, and is compatible with your Olympus camera is key.

What are the most common memory card formats?

It's important to understand which Olympus SmartMedia camera memory card formats are available so that you can choose the one that most suits your needs.

  • SD: This type of card is going to be the smallest variety. SD stands for "Secure Digital." There is also a micro-SD variant available. SD and micro-SD cards hold up to 2GB of memory. This type of card is ideal for those who are taking pictures for fun or as a hobby. They're also good if you plan to regularly transfer everything to a computer and wipe the card clean to be used again.
  • SDHC: This stands for "Secure Digital High Capacity." Generally, these cards run at a higher speed class than SD cards and hold more memory. They can contain up to 32GB of memory generally. These cards will not work with SD-compatible cameras. Though SD cards can be used with SDHC cameras, usually.
  • SDXC: These cards have the highest capacity of the three standard formats. They also usually have the highest speed class processing abilities. SDXC cameras can use SDHC and SD cards. SDXC cards can hold up to a whopping 2TB of data. These cards are ideal for shooting high-definition photos and videos.
What are the available chip processing speed classes?

The speed class references how quickly a SmartMedia card can write and record electronic digitally transmitted data. The speed class will greatly affect your ability to shoot video. There are five different speed classes, plus a UHS-1. The higher the class, the faster your memory card can process and convert digital media data. The memory chip class will usually be printed on the card and is available in its product details. The five main speed classes are as follows:

  • 2: 2MB/s
  • 4: 4MB/s
  • 6: 6MB/s
  • 8: 8MB/s
  • 10: 10MB/s
Is UHS-1 different from class 10?

UHS-1, also known as UHS-I, or UHS class 10 cards are great for recording high-capacity videos with your digital camera. UHS stands for "Ultra High Speed." UHS-1 cards run at 10 megabytes per second (10MB/s) and are really no different than class 10 cards. Class 10 and UHS-1 cards are usually interchangeable. Very few processing platforms will specifically require UHS-1 cards to be used in place of class 10 cards.

What else should you consider before choosing a memory card?

There are a couple of other things you may wish to keep in mind.

  • Size and storage: Know how much storage space you want to have. If you plan to use your card for a long time without transferring images to a computer, opt for a card with more memory.
  • Brand compatibility: Some storage card brands are designed to pair specifically with your digital camera. Olympus cards, for example, pair well with Olympus brand digital cameras.
  • Data transfer: It's a good idea to be sure that you have the corresponding chip reader on hand so that you can easily transfer data to your computer, tablet, or smart device.
