Computer CPUs with an LGA775 Socket

LGA775 is an Intel computer processor socket. LGA is an acronym for land grid array. The biggest difference between the LGA 775 and earlier processors is the fact that it has no socket holes. The socket 775 connects to the CPU via pins which make contact with pins at the bottom of the processor. There is also an LGA 771 socket which is meant for servers and workstations using Xenon chips. Although the LGA 775 socket is still widely used, it was superseded by the LGA1156 and LGA1366 sockets.

Why do I need a CPU?

The central processing unit (CPU) is considered the brains of your computer. Although the CPU is only one of many processing units on the motherboard of your computer, it is the most important one. It carries out calculations, runs programs, and also carries out other actions. The unit receives instructions from the computer's RAM, decodes and processes the instructions and delivers an output. The small square chip is mounted on the computer's motherboard where it interacts with the other hardware to operate your computer.

What are dual-core and quad-core processors?

The first CPUs only had a single core, or processor, effectively limiting them to a single set of tasks at a time. This meant that computing was often slow and time-consuming. To increase processing time, manufacturers added a second CPU on the same chip. So a dual-core processor is basically two separate CPUs on a single chip. To further increase performance and reduce processing time, quad-core processors were developed. So if you want to increase performance on your computer and speed up processing time, it makes sense to upgrade your Intel single-core processor.

Which socket 775 CPU can I buy?

There are a number of socket 775 CPUs available. The following are just a few of them:

  • Intel Xeon L5408. This LGA 775 quad-core processor has a clock speed of 2.13 GHz, 12 MB cache memory, FSB bus speed of 1066 MHz and 64-bit computing.
  • Intel Core2 Quad Q6700. The Q6700 LGA775 CPU has a clock speed of 2.66 GHz, 4 MB cache memory and 64-bit computing.
  • Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6800. The LGA775 E6800 has a clock speed of 3.33 GHz, 2 MB cache memory, FSB bus speed of 1066 MHz and 64-bit computing.
