Yamaha Road Star Motorcycle Fuel Pumps

Your motorcycle fuel pump is an essential component of your bike. It not only helps power your motorcycle, but also helps improve your fuel economy. There are many USA-made parts available for your Yamaha Road Star motorcycle.

What is a motorcycle fuel pump?

A fuel pump is a specially designed part within a motorized vehicle that pumps the fuel from the fuel tank to the engine. The fuel that gets pumped by this part is what powers and moves your engine. While these can be found in both carburetor and fuel-injected vehicles, most contemporary vehicles include a fuel-injected system.

There are two main types of pumps, which are categorized by which type of engine system they are used for. Carburetor systems typically use a pump located in the exterior of the tank, while fuel-injected systems use models that are located on the interior of your Yamaha tank.

What are the main types of fuel pumps?

The two main types of fuel pumps include the following:

  • Mechanical: Many older motorcycle and car models use this type of part, which is used in carburetor-fueled systems. Mechanical fuel pumps are driven by camshafts or distributor shafts, where they are moved into float chambers within the carburetor. Because of this float chamber, the part does not function with a specified pressure, resulting in greater fuel consumption.
  • Electric: Most contemporary motorcycles and cars use a fuel-injected engine system, which allows an electric pump to function at a specified pressure that is specifically required by the fuel-injected engine system. This type creates less resistance within the tank and motor, and results in lower fuel consumption.
When should you replace the fuel pump?

Unlike many other Yamaha parts, this part does not have a recommended time to be replaced. If the pump in your Road Star is not working correctly however, you will consume more fuel and potentially harm your motor. While there is no recommended time for replacement, there are symptoms you can watch for that could signify a poorly functioning fuel pump. These symptoms can include noticeable noises or fuel leaks, the new appearance of a check engine light, or any loss of power in the engine and/or engine start issues.

What fuel pumps can you find for your Yamaha?

There are many available components for your Road Star, whether they are OEM or aftermarket parts. These pumps are made to specifically fit your bike, and they are available in many materials. You can find these made of sheet steel, aluminum, synthetic rubber, iron, or even gold. They can be found as individual pieces and components, or as specialized kits. You can find fuel pumps for your Yamaha categorized by their voltage, pressure, and horsepower specifications.
