How To Record Videos From TV To A Digital Video Recorder

Digital video recorder (DVR) recorders exist in a number of homes today due to the convenience it brings with it. A DVR is simply a computer device that you can use to record video content.

It could be a Panasonic or a Blu-ray player, it doesn't matter. With a good DivX recorder, you can record an entire show of your favorite program and watch it later through its playback features.

How much storage space do I need in my DVR or DVD recorder?

Video files are generally large and can take up a lot of your DVD recorder's space. High definition (HD) videos take up even more space from your DivX player.

When this happens, you risk losing the existing files saved on your recorder especially since your DVR can overwrite old files. If this happens, you will need to

  • Transfer files from DVD recorder - Move your files recording from your DivX to an HDD hard drive back up for future access.
  • Add external USB HDD - Expand your inbuilt hard drive by installing a hard disc drive (HDD) so you do not have to transfer files from your DVD player.

What do I need to hook my recorder to my DivX DVD player?

Connecting your DVR to your Blu-ray player is not a complicated process. However, you need to consider a number of things. One is, you will definitely require the Blu-ray and the DVR.

  • Compatibility - There are a number of players in the market today and a few things that are an absolute must before you begin recording. For instance, the format of your player should be compatible with your DVD recorder. Blu-ray players have formats that are specially built to support both DVD and CD disks.
  • Blu-ray disks - Disks on Blu-ray will provide quality image recording when compared to others.
  • Quality cables - If you intend to use analog cables to connect to a recorder that is digital, ensure they are of excellent quality so that your DVD accepts it and your DVR outputs.
  • Quality video - A HDTV comes with HD features already built-in. Having said that, set your HDTV to full HD settings to ensure quality images and video streaming.

How do I record videos on my recorder?

Also known as streaming, you can record video files on your Panasonic recorder as you receive it from your HD TV.

  1. Turn on all devices, TV or monitor, from which you are recording your DVD recorder and your Blue-ray player.
  2. Using audio and video cables, connect from the rear outputs of your video recorder to the rear inputs on your HDTV. Remember a TV that displays in full HD will give you better quality video recordings during playback.
  3. Using component cables, also known as RCA, connect the TV and your DVD recorder. The cables are distinctly colored to guide you. Yellow is for video, while red and white represent audio.
  4. Plug in the component video cable and the red and white RCA cables to the outputs on your TV source.
  5. Plug in the component and RCA red and white cables to the outputs on the video recorder and inputs on your TV.

From here, you need to configure all your connections to ensure your recorder is working. You also need to check that they are stored in the HDD hard drive and the playback is working fine.

Check also that it gives Blu-ray quality images in HD. Once you are done, you can choose to watch from your recorder, if your settings allow, or connect to your DivX or Blu-ray and watch it.
