The air conditioning and heating unit is an important part of your Jeep as it helps you stay comfortable while driving. Over time, you may need to replace the air conditioner and heater controls in your Jeep. You may also wish to upgrade your unit to make it more functional and energy-efficient.

How do the air conditioning and heater controls work?

While the air conditioner and heater in your car do the actual heating and cooling, you need the knobs to set the temperature. Several parts are involved in keeping your car cool and warm.

  • Temperature control panel: The temperature control panel is located on the dashboard of your Jeep. Depending on the year and model, there may be buttons, sliders, or knobs that let you manage the system. In some models, you even have separate controls for the driver, passenger, and back seat. The more controls you have in your car, the more you can customize the interior climate.
  • Air flow: Moving behind the panel, you will find ducts that manage the flow of air in your vehicle. When using your heater, air is warmed by the heater core, while it is cooled by the evaporator core. A blend door mixes the cool and warm air to achieve the temperature you have set. Even when using the air conditioner, some hot air is used as a dehumidifier to reduce the humidity in the air.
  • Manual or electronic controls: Depending on the age of your Jeep, it may use manual or electronic controls. Manual controls use cables connected to the controls, and electronic controls use an electronic system to control the doors.

How do you change the controls and panel parts?

Changing these parts can be simple. You can often do it yourself with some minor mechanical skills. Below is a general overview of the procedure:

  1. Begin by removing the panel cover by popping it out. Carefully detach the electrical wires.
  2. Use a screwdriver to remove the old knobs. Remove the clips, as well.
  3. Replace with the new knobs and reattach the electrical wires.
  4. Return the panel to the dash. Make sure everything is working properly.
