Blu-Ray Players

Blu-Ray technology is the next evolution of home media devices. Blu-Ray players, like those offered by brands like Samsung and Panasonic, offer a detailed picture and can play and store data. Able to present your favorite movies, games, and television shows in both high definition and ultra high definition, Blu-Ray players are unmatched in both their audio and video quality and usefulness.

What is a 4K UHD Blu-ray?

Taking full HD to a different level, 4K ultra high definition (UHD) refers to 4K resolution on a television or another video screen. Something playing in 4K UHD means that the pixel count of the images on the screen will playback at a DCI 4K resolution, or 4096 pixels by 2160 pixels. Both this and other 4K resolutions (UHD-1 and UW4K) are known for their extremely high picture quality and sharpness, making them the optimal way of enjoying your favorite media.

What kind of devices work as Blu-ray players?

A variety of technology can be used to play Blu-ray discs. Dedicated players are available that play all manner of current video media, including Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and CDs. Miniature Blu-ray players are also available that are equipped to handle specially designed miniature discs (around 8 centimeters compared to the standard 12 centimeters). Additionally, Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, the Microsoft Xbox One, and Nintendo Wii U are all equipped to play these discs, with the PlayStation consoles being the first to adopt the technology. Connection to a monitor can be through an HDMI port and streaming is through built-in Wi-Fi.

What is the difference between Blu-ray players and DVD players?

The major difference between these two forms of technology is the laser used to read the discs inserted into them. This technology takes its name from the specialized blue wavelength laser emitted inside the machine to read the information stored on a particular disc. DVD players, on the other hand, utilize red wavelength lasers. Red lasers have a longer wavelength than blue lasers, meaning that, while blue lasers can read data from both standard DVDs and Blu-ray discs, a normal DVD player will be unable to read a Blu-ray disc. Additionally, these types of players are often equipped with Wi-Fi already built-in, allowing you to more easily connect to the internet and to stream your content without the need of discs at all.

How much data can a Blu-ray disc store at once?

Blu-ray discs, in addition to their superior quality and resolution compared to DVDs, have a much larger storage space. The standard Blu-ray disc can store up to 25 GB per layer. The standard number of layers for movies is set at two layers, meaning you will see 50 GB worth of space. Triple-layered and quadruple-layered discs are also available, featuring 75 GB and 100 GB of space respectively.
