How to Choose Laptop Replacement Keys

There are few things more frustrating than a key falling off your Acer laptop keyboard. No one wants to try to translate an email or document without the letter "n," so replacing the key is a priority. You don't have to replace the entire keyboard, though it is an option if you choose to do so.

What Comes in a Key Replacement Kit?

Buying a key replacement kit means you get everything you need at the same time, and you don't have to search for the various parts to repair your specific laptop model.

  • A kit comes with the key itself. The way the key looks depends on which model of laptop you have, as well as which letter you are missing on your keyboard. You can purchase letters individually if there is just one key that requires replacement.
  • A hinge is another part of the key mechanism that may also be called the key retainer clip. This small but necessary part is crucial because it actually holds the key cap to your keyboard.
  • Using your key requires you to have a miniature rubber suction cup, and this rubber cup acts as a spring and is the part that causes your key to go back up after you press it down.

How Do You Choose and Install the Right Keys?

Choosing the proper key depends on several factors. You need to make sure to purchase just the right key for your computer, so it fits properly and works as it should.

  • Determine your laptop's model. Every Acer Aspire laptop has a model number that should look like a four-digit number or a number with a letter included. Some examples are 5732Z, 5252, or 5810, and you'll need to make sure that you know the model number to get the right key.
  • Know which keyboard keys you need to replace. This includes whether they are number or function keys.
  • Have the necessary tools on hand to replace your keys. To grasp these small pieces and parts, you'll need the proper tools, such as a tweezer or a pry tool to lift the old key and remove it to install the new key.

What Are the Key Types?

There are a few different key types, so it's important to ensure you get the right key for the replacement you need. Keys are shaped differently and fit into your keyboard differently, so purchasing the right key is a priority, or else you could end up requiring a new keyboard.

  • Number keys are the keys that usually line the top of your keyboard. They are typically the same size as letter keys.
  • Letter keys are the main keys of your laptop's keyboard, but they do have their own distinct size and style based on the model of your laptop.
  • Function keys aren't the same size as the other keys. These keys include the F1 and F2 keys and so on, as well as larger keys like the Shift, Enter, or Backspace key, which are a different size altogether.
